Hello. My name is Marty Tomao. I was born in Sparta, New Jersey, USA, in 1972. During high school, I moved with my family to Madrid, Spain, because of my father’s work, and I attended the Madrid American School. After graduating from high school, I returned to the United States and entered California State University, Humboldt, where I majored in both English and Spanish. During my time there, I deepened my knowledge and experience through many courses in education, language acquisition, and teaching methodology, and I also studied abroad in Spain. I attended the Complutense University of Madrid as well, and I am fluent in Spanish. I also speak Japanese and continue to study every day to improve further. I hold a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualification. TESOL is an internationally recognized certificate for teaching English to those whose native language is not English.
After graduating from university, I first came to Japan in 1996 through the JET Programme and worked in Fukui Prefecture for three years. After that, I moved to Kyoto for further Japanese study and work. Later, I returned to the United States and worked for two years as a financial advisor at American Express Securities.
In November 2003, I left that position and returned to Japan. From then until March 2008, I worked at an English kindergarten in Kumamoto. In April 2008, I founded my own school, Hilltop International School, which I continue to lead to this day.
I have been involved in English education for 27 years, 22 of which have been in English kindergartens (international schools) teaching young children. As part of my ongoing professional growth, I will begin pursuing two qualifications through ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) in September 2025. The first is a K–8 teaching credential, which allows me to officially teach at Christian international schools. The second is the Head of School Credential, which provides systematic training in leadership and school management.
I am married and have three young children. My hobbies are reading the Bible daily and growing organic vegetables year-round for our family to enjoy. I am also a passionate baseball fan, and my favorite team is the New York Yankees.
My wife and I are Protestant Christians, and together with our family we attend Harvest Church Kumamoto. I treasure family time above all else and make it a priority to spend weekday evenings and weekends together as much as possible.

はじめまして。私はアメリカ・ニュージャージー州スパルタ出身のトマオ・マーティ（Marty Tomao）と申します。1972年生まれです。高校時代、父の仕事の都合で家族とともにスペインのマドリードへ移り、「マドリード・アメリカン・スクール」に通いました。高校卒業後はアメリカに戻り、カリフォルニア州立ハンボルト大学に進学し、英語とスペイン語を二重専攻で学びました。在学中には教育学、言語習得、教授法に関する多くのコースで知識と経験を深め、スペインへの留学も経験しました。マドリード・コンプルテンセ大学でも学び、スペイン語も堪能です。現在は日本語も話せますが、さらに上達を目指して日々勉強を続けています。私は「TESOL英語教授法資格」を取得しています。TESOLとは「他言語話者に対する英語教授法（Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages）」の略称で、英語を母語としない方々に英語を教えるための国際的な教育資格です。
大学卒業後の1996年、文部科学省のJETプログラム（語学指導等を行う外国青年招致事業）を通じて初めて来日し、福井県で3年間勤務しました。その後は日本語の学習と仕事のため京都に移り住みました。その後、一度アメリカに戻り、アメリカン・エクスプレス証券にて金融アドバイザーとして2年間勤務しました。
2003年11月に退職し再来日し、熊本にある英語の幼稚園で2008年3月まで勤務しました。そして2008年4月、自身の園である「ヒルトップ・インターナショナル・スクール」を開園し、現在に至ります。英語教育歴は27年に及び、そのうち22年間は英語幼稚園、いわゆるインターナショナルスクールにおいて子どもたちに英語を教えてきました。
私自身の継続的な専門的成長の一環として、2025年9月より、国際的に認知されているACSI（キリスト教学校国際協会）を通じて2つの資格取得を開始する予定です。1つ目は、幼稚園から中学2年生（K–8）までの教員資格であり、キリスト教インターナショナルスクールにおいて正式に指導を行うことができる資格です。2つ目は、校長資格（Head of School Credential）であり、学校経営における幅広い業務やリーダーシップに必要な能力を体系的に学ぶ内容となっています。
私は結婚しており、3人の子どもがおります。子どもたちはまだ幼いです。趣味は毎日聖書を読むことと、無農薬野菜を一年通して育て、自分たちで食べることです。また、大の野球好きで、応援しているチームはニューヨーク・ヤンキースです。
私と妻はプロテスタントのキリスト教徒で、現在は「ハーベストチャーチ熊本」に家族で通っています。家族との時間を何より大切にしており、平日の夕食や週末はできる限り一緒に過ごすよう心がけています。
